Exhume — frequently asked questions.

What is free, and what does Exhume Pro add?

The editor is free and stays free: open, read, edit and save any file of any size, syntax highlighting, multiple cursors, column selection, find and replace with regular expressions, folding, unlimited undo, themes, comparing with the file on disk, and recovery of unsaved work after a crash.

Exhume Pro adds the things that turn the editor into a work tool: find and replace across folders and open documents, the folder tree and workspaces, macros with an editable list of steps and Shortcuts support, split panes with synchronised scrolling, the symbol list and the structure ribbon, and remappable keyboard shortcuts.

How does the 30-day trial work?

Both subscriptions — monthly and yearly — begin with 30 days free. You are not charged during the trial, and you can cancel at any time in Settings › Apple Account › Subscriptions. If you cancel at least 24 hours before the trial ends, nothing is charged. There is also a one-off perpetual purchase, which is not a subscription and never renews.

Where do I find the paid features, and how do I buy?

Paid commands are never hidden. They stay listed in the command palette with their name and the words “Exhume Pro” underneath, and selecting one opens the purchase screen, where the price, the period and the trial are shown before anything is bought.

I bought it on another device. How do I unlock it here?

Open the purchase screen and choose Restore Purchases, signed in with the same Apple Account you bought it with. The purchase is shared across your Mac, iPhone and iPad.

I opened a huge file and some things switched off. Why?

That is deliberate, and Exhume says so: on very large files it disables the work that would make typing stutter — syntax colouring first, then the smart highlight — and names what it turned off in the status bar. It never quietly does less and lets you think the language is unsupported. Editing, searching and saving are never limited by file size.

My Mac crashed. Did I lose what I hadn’t saved?

No. Exhume keeps a copy of unsaved work while you type and offers it back the next time it starts, in a new window — it never writes over the file on disk on your behalf.

Does Exhume send anything anywhere?

No. There is no account, no analytics, no crash reporting and no licence server. The only network traffic is Apple’s own purchase check when you buy Exhume Pro, and Apple makes that call. See the privacy policy.

Where are my files kept on iPhone and iPad?

Wherever you put them. Exhume uses the system document browser, so it opens files in place from iCloud Drive, from your device, or from any other provider you have. Documents you create inside the app appear in Files › On My iPhone/iPad › Exhume, so you can copy, share and back them up like any other file.

How do I request a refund?

Purchases are processed by Apple. You can request a refund at reportaproblem.apple.com.
